Reflections on 40 years | As I reflect on the past 40 years in the direct selling industry, it feels both surreal and immensely fulfilling. I’ve had the privilege to witness its evolution from both sides of the field—as a distributor and as an executive. It’s been an unforgettable journey marked by significant milestones, inspiring people, and a shared commitment to fostering dreams and community.

My career began in 1979 as a distributor with Amway. Back then, I was one of the many driven by a vision of free enterprise, empowered by the opportunity to build something meaningful. I remember building a downline of over 4,000 people—without today’s technology, it was a monumental feat.

Communication was limited, recruitment was face-to-face, and every sign-up required paperwork. Growth was slow but steady, and the sense of accomplishment came from every connection made, every dream pursued, and every life touched. What has always fueled me is that this industry isn’t just about business; it’s about people and helping them realize their dreams.

In the 1990s, I moved into executive roles with several companies, gaining new perspectives on what it takes to build and manage direct selling organizations. This was a time when companies still relied on spreadsheets for tracking commissions, which was neither efficient nor always accurate. It was an era that brought its own challenges and rewards, and I learned firsthand the importance of precision, integrity, and, most importantly, the human connection at the core of every direct selling enterprise.

Since joining ByDesign in 2004, I’ve been lucky to be part of a revolutionary shift. ByDesign was a small team of just four people back then, all united by the goal of transforming the industry through technology. When I first started, software wasn’t widely embraced; companies were hesitant to adopt automated solutions. But gradually, technology started bridging gaps, making it easier for distributors to reach people and run their businesses with efficiency and personalization that we couldn’t have imagined in 1979.

The shift was profound. Technology like e-commerce, replicated websites, and now mobile apps made it possible to extend reach beyond close circles, giving distributors new ways to build and promote their brands. At ByDesign, I’ve seen firsthand how software has enabled direct selling companies to streamline operations, improve transparency, and empower distributors with tools that were once unimaginable.

What hasn’t changed in all these years is the heart of this industry: relationships. From every level—whether it’s a distributor’s team, a company’s corporate culture, or the bond between the distributor and the customer—direct selling is about people. It’s about supporting each other’s dreams, no matter where we come from or what our backgrounds are. This community has a unique way of making people feel connected and valued, offering a place where they can become the best versions of themselves. And that’s something technology has only enhanced, not replaced.

One of the greatest gifts I’ve received is the chance to work with and learn from innovators. Every day, I meet people who are as passionate about the future as they are about keeping the core values of this industry alive. I’ve been inspired by the next generation—those who bring fresh ideas and are constantly pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. I find myself energized by working alongside people young enough to be my own children, whose perspectives and openness keep this industry moving forward.

Direct selling continues to evolve, but at its heart, it remains a community-driven space where everyone can succeed regardless of their background. It’s a world where, if you have the determination, you can create change. It’s been incredibly rewarding to work with ByDesign, helping direct selling companies reach their potential and achieve growth. Every day has been a chance to meet someone new, to hear their dreams, and to be reminded that, in this business, the journey is just as important as the destination.

To everyone who has been a part of my journey—thank you. Thank you for the experiences, the shared dreams, and the support over the years. I look forward to watching the industry continue to grow, adapt, and thrive in the capable hands of those who see its value and potential.
